Before trusting a statistic, ask: 'Who benefits if this number is believed?' If the answer is the company that funded the study, read even more carefully.
How to Evaluate Research Credibility
1. Check the Source
Is this from a known research firm, university, or trade body? Look them up. What other work have they published? Are they cited by other credible outlets?
2. Find the Methodology Section

The Federal Trade Commission has caught companies making health claims based on unpublished or flawed research. In home improvement, the pattern is milder but familiar: a brand-funded study, a press release, then widespread repetition across blogs and social media.
The cure is not paranoia—it's slowness. Before sharing or acting on a study, spend 15 minutes understanding who paid for it and what methods they used.
What Legitimate Research Looks Like
University-led studies, peer-reviewed journals, and government agencies like the U.S. Department of Energy publish research on building science, efficiency, and construction trends. These sources have reputational stakes—their credibility depends on accuracy.
Even commercial studies can be solid if the funding is transparent, the sample is large, and the claims are narrow. A window manufacturer commissioning research on modern preferences in materials is fine. The bias is obvious, so readers can interpret
accordingly.
The worst offenders are studies that appear independent but are really marketing material in disguise—no author listed, vague funding, and claims that conveniently favor an entire product category, not just one brand.
