Read the abstract and methods, not just the headline.

5. Cross-reference with independent sources

A single published study, even in a respected journal, is a starting point, not a conclusion.

Consider the timing

Home research from 2024 about pandemic-era renovation trends may not reflect 2026 behavior. Always check publication dates and consider how much the market or technology has shifted since the study ran.

What counts as industry consensus

A single study claiming energy-efficient windows pay for themselves in seven years is interesting. Multiple independent studies, government calculators, and homeowner data pointing to similar timelines is consensus.

Consensus in the home industry often emerges from trade associations like the National Association of Home Builders, university extension services, or government energy efficiency programs—sources with reputations that depend on accuracy, not on selling one product.

When you encounter a claim, ask: how many independent sources confirm this? If only the vendor's own research backs it up, treat it as marketing with a scientific veneer.
